School2Home is a program designed to help close the the Digital Divide and the Achievement Gap by integrating the use of technology into teaching and learning at low-performing middle schools throughout California.  It is sponsored by the California Emerging Technology Fund and The Children's Partnership.

Key Elements

  • Targets Title 1 middle schools in Program Improvement
  • Helps students acquire core skills in reading, writing, math and science
  • Provides students the chance to develop the deeper learning skills needed to succeed in high school and beyond
  • Provides teachers with professional development opportunities focused on integrating technology and project-based learning into classroom learning and out-of-school projects, and to engage parents.
  • Engages parents as learning partners
  • Targets families who lack home computers and broadband
  • Makes technology relevant with school-centered parent education and engagement
  • Infuses technology into every aspect of student learning at school and home

What's New
School2Home is in its second year of implementation at Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School in Los Angeles and Central Middle School in Riverside, California.  It is serving approximately 3,000 students and parents, 100 teachers, 2 principals and their leadership teams.  School2Home is supporting these schools for 2-3 years until each grade has successfully made the transition to the new platform.  School2Home is also helping to prepare Principals and leaders at other schools throughout California who are interested in the program, funding permitting.

A recent evaluation by Rockman et al, an external evaluator based in San Francisco, CA, has found significant gains in the levels of teacher preparation and parent engagement. The most dramatic gains were with parents.

  • More than 90% of the participating parents have attended the parent training sessions.
  • The most significant increase in outcomes related to the proportion of parents who knew how to access their child's information online and who had in fact done so.
  • Before the training, only 27% of the parents knew how to access this information and only 5% had actually done so.
  • After the training, 84% knew how to do it and more than half of the parents had actually looked up their child's records online.
